• Watch morning puja rituals, yogis in meditation, pilgrims performing Ganga Snan, and the smoke of Manikarnika rising against the golden sky — one of India's most extraordinary visual experiences

Morning — Sarnath

• Sarnath (12 km from Varanasi) — the Deer Park where the Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta), setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion


• Dhamek Stupa (500 CE) — the 34-metre stupa marking the exact spot of Buddha's first discourse; covered in exquisite Gupta-era geometric carvings


• Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath — the pillar erected in 250 BCE whose Lion Capital became India's national emblem; the Dhamma Chakra became the wheel on the national flag

Morning — Gupt Godavari & Sphatik Shila

• Gupt Godavari Caves (18 km from Ramghat) — two mysterious cave temples where Lord Ram held court during his exile; one cave requires wading through ankle-to-knee-deep water through a narrow passage (symbolic of passage to the divine) while the other opens into a vast hall with a perennial stream and ancient Shivalinga; a geological and spiritual marvel unique in all of India


• Sphatik Shila — a naturally formed crystalline quartz rock on the Mandakini bank where Lord Ram and Sita are said to have rested; Ram's footprints are preserved here; one of Chitrakoot's most revered and photographed spots


• Janaki Kund — a sacred bathing kund (tank) on the Mandakini where Sita bathed daily; a peaceful, tree-lined spot with an ancient temple
